Some books rip you through their pages like a girl on a rubber ring down the rapids (like 'The Goldfinch'). 'Last Night at Lobster Inn' is more like a slow bathe in the tub. I don't mean it's boring - it isn't, O'Nan's writing is beautiful and clear and real - it's just that nothing happens. And that nothing happening washed gently over me and it felt, well, just lovely. It is the sad slow waltz of the Lobster Inn staff on their final night of work. They dance the same moves they danced the previous night after night after night. But somehow, O'Nan makes it so poignant. I wonder if it was a bit of an experiment in structure/plot(lessness)? I will read more by him to compare...
