I was a bit disappointed with this book after reading many reviews. I think the fault lies with the fact that both the story and the writing were flawed. At points, the writing was so heavy handed that major plot points became extremely predictable due to the amount of "foreshadowing."

I ended up giving the book 3 stars because, superficially, it was an enjoyable read. However, I found the supporting characters to be much more compelling than the main character, whose blind ignorance and arrogance often lead him to make some of the stupidest decisions.

What may bring me to picking up the second volume in this series is the excellent way the story portrayed the complicated nature of human relationships. I really enjoyed watching Darrow develop deep, emotional connections to people he thought he would hate. To me, it was an excellent way to portray how prejudice can shape us, until we take a moment to put ourselves in the role of those we judge.
