"The Smell of the Sea" was unnecessarily graphically violent and disturbing. I wish I had never read it. The rest of the book has flashes of excellence akin to [Book:Winter Stars].

I agree is was disturbing and sometimes I wish I had never read it either, but I believe it was necessarily graphic—it depicts the complexities of the world we live in, and it was handled with as much skill and grace as possible.

Robert No argument on the skill. But the skill alone was not redemtive to me. Need our art be a conduit for distubance in such an already at times disturbing world? I think only if it does so in an attempt to find some light. Skill alone does not make us better for the reading. Just my take.
