This intriguing little book is a quiet journey into the lives of country folk living in Suffolk, outside London, during WWII. The story centers around La, who gathers her fellow countrymen together to play music in a local orchestra. I enjoyed the history and delicate insight into the people of this time. McCall Smith creates wonderful characters, in careful detail, and I love the way he introduces them to us.
