Lively Plant Science Projects ( from the Real Life Science Experiments series) offers a thorough introduction to scientific methodology and plant science. Ten accessible experiments open with an initial question, solicit hypotheses about the answer, explain how to set up the experiment and establish a timeline, detail how to vary the conditions for constants and variables and keep track of observations, give a final explanation of results, and offer ideas for related science fair projects. Each also includes an ingredient list with both supplies and conditions, such as sunlight. Directed questions guide the student’s observations. Experiments explore concepts children will find familiar, such as light, nutrition and water. The text includes an introductory safety list, brief glossary, additional resources and index, as well as a blend of photographs and drawn illustrations. Experiments may require some adult assistance; additionally, a sample or reproducible chart for recording observations would have been helpful. An SLJ review was less positive, deeming a few of the drawings inadequate and the experiments “standard fare.” Library binding.
