Upon hearing that this was the book that had inspired 'Cloud Atlas', I wanted to read it. Never, have I been so frustrated with a book in my life! I would say 2.5 stars, rather than 2. This book consists of a number of different stories, each started and never finished. There is also an underlying story written in second person, from your perspective, and you watch as the other you becomes frustrated too and goes on a desperate journey to find the endings of the books he has started, only to continue to find more and more beginnings. I started off loving this one. What a clever idea I thought, to have one main story mixed up with ten others, all completely unrelated. But as I ambled through I began to hate, no, loathe this novel. It became apparent that I wasn't going to get the answers, the endings, I wanted. As well as this, the only constant, consistent story that I was getting just became ridiculous and unbelievable. Most of the characters annoyed me and honestly I just wanted to curl up and cry about how confused I was. Two stars I have awarded to reach a semi-compromise between the part of me that thinks this is a genius work, and the part of me that wants this book burned. Forever.
