The second in the His Dark Materials trilogy, The Subtle Knife introduces Will, Lyra's foil. Will is serious, dangerous, and single-minded, and he and Lyra team up to solve the mysteries of their worlds. In the process, Will comes into possession of a knife that can cut through the fabric of existence and open doorways into new worlds.

While it isn't quite as thrilling as The Golden Compass this book has its fair share of harrowing experiences and close calls and, unlike most middle books, feels less like a bridge between the beginning and ending of the trilogy and more like a novel in its own right.
