really liked it

This book took a long time to get going for me, pretty much the entirety of the "Land" section, a full third of the book. That first third felt like the author said, "Oh, man, I know so much about the pidgin of sailors and the Opium Wars! I've got a book to write!" Just very...it was like the world-building part of fantasy books, you know? You can just feel the author getting more and more excited by his invention and crawling around inside of it. Thankfully, Ghosh never goes too far, but it was sometimes a labor to read.

Parts II and III really get going--both because I was in the swing of the language and setting, and because there was some serious plot movement--and in the end I liked the book much more than I thought I would in the first 100 pages. I'll finish the trilogy along with Ghosh, but I'm going to be more willing to skim going forward.
