High 4. This is the desciption of the apocalyptic struggle played out in the rural Brazilian backdrop of the late nineteenth century between the federal authorities and the defenders of the libertarian community of Canudos. The residents of the latter are devout followers of the charismatic and messianic figure of the Counsellor. The story is based on several strands where different characters relate the slide towards the final confrontation. A sort of medieval morality tale and seige warfare transfered to a Latin American landscape. Worthy of greater recognition.
