Possession: A Romance
Low 1. This will hopefully remain unchallenged as the novel which became the sternest test to my own determination to reach the end of any novel. Byatt has managed to persuade a wide readership to subsume their love of literature beneath oceans of pretentiousness. The scholarly pursuit of truth; the burgeoning love=story between two individuals who share the same passion; the exploration of personal correspondence; the collection of victorian poetry - too many strands to even affect any maintenance of interest. This should have remained within academia and not inflicted on public bookshelves. Tepid and insipid.
