Amazon sent me an email with their top ten YA books of 2009. Catching Fire was number seven. I got pretty excited - six books better than Catching Fire! This one was number one. My expectations were sky-high.

That said, I don't think this is as good as Catching Fire. It has a lot going for it. The portrayal of high school life in the south is great and definitely reminded me of my own experiences. The characters aren't stupid, which is a nice change of pace from most YA books. They pick up on the clues about when I did, as opposed to many books that rely on the protagonist not getting something that's obvious to the reader.

On the other hand, the book was a little long. The middle third really dragged, and the lack of subplots made it tough to plow through. The fantasy aspects were underdeveloped for a book of this length.

Overall, not the best book of 2009, but certainly far from the worst.
