It took me awhile to warm up to this story. It is written in two alternating parts that eventually combine and I have to admit I was partial to one of them and not the other. Once they joined I was hooked.

The story revisits the events that preceded WWI. Each side of the war is associated with a different style of machine, the Clankers which are purely mechanical and the Darwins which are fabrications of machine and DNA.
The style is "steampunk" and when I first learned of the term I immediately thought of the Studio Ghibli film and book by Dianna Wynne Jones, Howl's Moving Castle. I am very much looking forward to the sequel to Leviathan!
