The Book of Life (All Souls Trilogy, #3)

I'm disappointed that so many people are refusing to read this book because it's taken so long to come out. Shit happens that pushes publication dates back. Lots of shit happens. And some of you guys are acting like it's a personal affront and the author is just trying to piss you off. You're acting like children. No wonder authors hate reviewers. The book hasn't even come out yet and you're already talking trash.

I agree. They haven't truly waited for a book until they wait for one of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books to come out. It will be 6 years between books when the latest one is released. And it will be worth every single day of waiting. I appreicate an author who makes sure the books is right before rushing publication. :-)

Clearly those readers weren't around for the great wait between Harry Potter book 4 and 5... Or Game Of Thrones (I don't read it, but I know people who were desperately waiting.) Books take time and authors have things to do and obligations besides writing.
The author herself, said she wants to make sure the finale is everything we hoped for. Why would you want that rushed? I read one badly written and immature comment and had to stop there. Patients is a virtue and we will be glad we waited for a good ending. And when writing reviews I wish people would use correct spelling and grammar. "Coz" is not a word, either use because or 'cause. Once they have that figured out then they can go on to bad mouthing something to make themselves feel better.
I can't wait! It's a delicious anticipation, and I will probably read each of the first books again for the third time. Then I will appreciate the book even more when it is finally here.
ik kan niet wachten tot hij uit is in België!!! ik weet nu al dat die keigoed gaat zijn!!! Superspannend xkatje
I agree that it has been a painful wait, but I much prefer that an author be truly satisfied with their work than rush it. Plus, this is a very well-thought out series.
From what I understand, the author was incredibly ill for a while. In and out of the hospital repeatedly while she was trying to write the last book.
Wow. Wasn't aware of that. That happened with another author I was reading. Her last book was supposed to be published a few years ago, I think. Don't know what ever happened to her.
BTW, I just quickly browsed your many lists of books. I was wondering if you could recommend anything for someone who loved these? I am currently out of ideas and not really interested in my current To-Read list.
That's a tough one, because this is kind of a unique series for me. It's heavy in history but it's not like some other paranormal romances that randomly throw a historical character like Dracula into modern day Las Vegas. Ghosts, daemons, vamps, witches - it has all your paranormal regulars. And then you add time travel on top of it. It's a doozy. But I do have a couple series that I desperately want other people to read, so I'll suggest them whenever I have the opportunity. Which you just unwittingly gave me.
So I would recommend The Tairen Soul Series by C.L. Wilson. It features Fey and Mages, so it's magic-only. It's a super intense uhhh romantic fantasy suspense paranormal...something. It's epic. I loved it.
The other series I would recommend is Theirs Not To Reason Why Series by Jean Johnson. It's a futuristic space-military psychic heroine vs. lizard alien kinda... thing. Looking at your book shelves, it probably isn't your thing but I am so desperately in love with it that I would recommend it to my cat. Twice.
I get long-winded and incoherent when I'm tired, I'm sorry if this made no sense.
Thanks for those recommendations I am always looking for something to read and those sounds like something I would enjoy. Right now I've just been retreading some of my favorites.
I appreciate it. I actually swing all over the place and am trying to read things based on recommendations from this site and friends. It is often hard to determine whether I would like stuff or not based on short descriptions. And sometimes, the reviews from readers not reliable (especially when it comes to cozies, UGH). I will grab the first installations on both series and see what I think. Thanks!
Here here I totally agree people can be very whiny and childish when it comes to something like that I would still read it even if it took eight years to complete it would literally probably kill me because I'm not a patient person but it would not make me wanna read it any less probably the opposite if you really love something is worth the wait thanks for the recommendation of the other series that you suggested to another reader looks interesting I'll give it a try
As authors have families and other priorities in life as well, I think people should be more considerate of their time. Ms. Harkness is also a Professor that teaches and she deserves to do things she loves in her life as well as write the stories we love to read and follow. Her characters and story development will be worth the wait and knowing that she had time to enjoy her own life while writing it makes it much more enriching !! People need to GROW UP and realize that life isn't always about their needs and desires all the time. A little wait sometimes does the soul good !!
I agree, authors have other responsibilities than writing. I would rather have an amazing book that took awhile to write than a crappy book that was rushed and had bad research and writing.
well that's what is meant by that old saying "cutting off your nose to spite your face". Silly. They are so going to break down and buy it. :) It was a hard wait but now it's just about here. Gave me a chance to re-read the first two over (& over) again. I have it on pre-order with Amazon. Delicious
I'm so excited, I can almost taste it! I'll reread the first two this coming weekend so I can jump right in on the 15th.But then I'm going to have to write a really good review that's worthy of the 100 likes my little rant has gotten. So I really hope this book is as amazing!
Some of us don't mind the wait if it's worth it. If this one is more like the second than the first, though, I'm going to buy a secondhand copy to put on my pyre of Books That Did It Wrong, right beside the third Divergent book.
Agreed. I wasn't really impressed with the second book - it kinda felt like the author was just showcasing her knowledge of historical figures and not enough time was spent on Diana and Matthew getting stuff done. I'm definitely more excited because it's the end and I'm interested to see how all the loose threads are tied up. If it's a disappointment, I'll only have another two weeks before "Hardship" by Jean Johnson comes out. So I won't have long to wallow. ;)
I thought I was the only one who didn't really like book 2! It bothered me that major deaths/events happened "off screen" and how, despite the "it's all of us together" feel that was given in book 1, book 2 was turned into a romantic historic lecture on relationships.Agreed, there's too much left to do so I hope Book 3 does it right. :)
I loved Book 1, but only liked book 2. It felt like some thing we had to go through to get ready for book 3.
I would rather wait and have her write the book she wants than rush to meet a publication date. The characters and her readers deserve a well thought out finish. I really liked the second book, but I'm a sucker for anything set in the Elizabethan period, so that is probably why. I enjoyed readings all these comments and the suggestions for other series; thank you all!
I agree. I pre ordered, just downloaded and am starting this morning. I can't wait to dig in. I'm sure it's going to be worth the wait. Then I'll probably go back and read the first two so I can read them all together. Writing is an art, you can't rush it for anyone.
Right on peeps. Those that said that kinda stuff will come around. It's a book not a television show. This stuff takes a lot of time to put together. I for one am sitting happy with a kindle and hard copy.
the solution is simple...Wiki provides a detailed lengthy synopsis of books one and two -- go there and refresh your memories like I did. here is the link--no excuses--http://allsoulstrilogy.wikia.com/wiki...
THAT'S ridiculous! Why are grown adults throwing tantrums for not getting what they want when they want it? Harkness wasn't going to rush this and have it suck. If you're not going to read it because you had to wait, your loss. Grow up. As for the rest of us, we will kick back and enjoy the final chapter.
People are impatient and silly! These books are so in depth... I can't imagine the amount of research that goes on for one of these types of books! I just started and I'm savoring it... I'm not ready for it to end.
Try being a Jean M Auel fan (or well now an anti-fan after the final book of drivel which is a shame as it was a good series, but that's another story...) Two years between book one and two, three to book three, five years to book four, twelve years to book five and nine years to the final book...
I would forget the books even exist numerous times in between publications. I guess it would be a nice surprise every several years? That's sounds like a horrible waste of excitement. I don't even understand how you could keep people interested in the series with so long between books. Two years? Maybe. Nine years? No way.
I came in between book 4 and book 5 and read it when I was 16 and LOVED it (probably not that great a book but for whatever reason I loved it and read it over and over and OVER). It was like 10 or 11 for me to the next which took soooooo long... She did research a lot though which was a bonus but still I (along with a lot of others) got impatient. The quality for five dropped a little but it was 25 years of researching and writing and maybe she was having a bad year. Then nine years to the last and I so wanted it because she had built stuff up from the first book. There were many rumours that she was dead or she had health issues or such and someone else was writing it etc. Sadly it was a waste of time and it was relased like two years ago and I've read maybe one third and haven't picked it up since about two or three weeks after I got it because it was just soooooo atrociously written and didn't deliver stuff she'd been building up on the previous five books... :( But there are long breaks...
I have to re-read the first 2 books so that I can appreciate this one. I just re read the Outlander series before reading book 8...
Totally there on that one, although it's more the stuff that has been happening the last few years. She had to take some time off due to personal reasons (not sure what but there was stuff like a death in the family or such...)But a lot of fans are VERY upset over the way it's been going... She's apparently said it is of upmost importance to her and she's put it at the top of her writing pile but apparently one of her other other series has had a number of releases so fans feel like they are being duped and strung along and that she doesn't care about them. (*I use the word apparently as I haven't personally followed the details, but this is what I am picking up from places like here where people have written reviews for the as yet to be released last book(s).
There has also been a lot of speculation (I'm going to be kind and go with this being third parties / rumour mill rather than her or her party doing it specifically) about release dates so there is a rumour that it's out on date x and people get excited and then it's like "Nope, not even close" and then another an another. That seems to peeving off a lot of fans too...

I was fully sympathetic at first because I understand she was so busy, but now it's just getting ignorant.
Well she took 7 or 8 years off because of family reasons or really serious medical condition or something... I started reading at the end of that quit time so didn't have the hang time as others. Whilst this is annoying, can't do much about it. I think it would also be a bit harsh to expect her to write if she'd cancer or she was 20 and her parents had died and she had to look after 3 younger siblings or something...But that she has come back, and from what I can see / gather has claimed that Nightworld is her top priority and she is working on it and yet last I looked the next book is due in 2040 or something stupid and she's released several from one of the series. Hmmm - obviously not your top priority. Please be honest. If she has writers block or whatever at least be honest about it.....
? Is this for the Discovery of Witches? (I haven't finished it yet)Or are we still talking Night World by L J SMITH which she wrote like 15 years with a big cliff hanger but had to take years off through personal issues and has said it's a big priority but fans feel like she's shafting them?
Wow, seriously? It's only been two years. That's really not that long. I'm surprised anyone would make that kind of complaint. The final book of another series I've been reading has had the publication date pushed back at least three times with it now supposedly coming out next summer with a three-year gap between books. I can say that the extra wait time, especially when publication dates keep changing, is very disappointing. I read so many books/series every year that I'm afraid I'll no longer feel connected to the characters (which is why now if I know starting out that a book is going to be part of a series, I won't start reading it until years later after all the books are released...since most series only have 3-4 books in them anyway), but I'm not going to behave like a child, doing the reader-equivalent of stomping my feet and throwing a temper tantrum, and refuse to read the book just because of the wait time. I can't say that after a really long wait time (which two years most certainly is not) that a series will still hold my interest and I'll still WANT to read the book, but I'm not going to refuse to read a book because of some kind of stubborn, childish point I'm trying to make. That's just stupid.
Totally agree with you And OMG I love that imagery... I am so "stealing" the reader induced foot stomping! :P
Brandon Sanderson goes years between books in his series, the Way of Kings. If you like the story, you wait with great anticipation. Too many need immediate gratification.
