it was ok
bookshelves: books-i-own, foodish

I read the whole "Julie/Julia Project" blog. I loved the movie. I even found it inspiring. However, this Julie Powell is a real asshole. I'm kind of appalled at the callous way she describes her affair, pretty much constantly rubbing her husband's nose in it the entire time it's going on (never mind the things she says and the acts she describes in the book - I think being with someone for over a decade and then reading those things would be extremely damaging). How unfeeling...

The writing is less than stellar. She tries to be one of the boys and a tough butcher lady, she really thinks she is pretty awesome and sexy and everyone wants her, etc... but through the whole book she whines, she lets the men in her life define her, and then she leaves to go "find herself" in a few other countries. I was over it after she left the butcher shop. I skimmed the last few chapters. I don't like this Julie Powell and the way she has no regard for anyone who is close to her. And I get the suspicion this is the "real her". She definitely didn't hold back talking about any aspect of her sex life. You like it rough, wooo you're a revolutionary! TMI, dude.

I'm kind of mad that I bought this book. Should have borrowed it from the library.

Jeannine I loved the whole concept of the Julie/Julia project, but never really liked the author's "voice". Even in the first book, she really turned me off, though again, LOVED the project! Since the movie came out she's received a lot of bad press and in an article she wrote (forgot where) she was really defensive and nasty. I was tempted to read this, just because I love a good food book, but I'm glad I passed. Great review!

Read Laurie Colwin, Amber, I think you'll like her. (Home Cooking: A Writer in the Kithcen and More Home Cooking: A Writer Returns to the Kitchen).

Trena What a great review! I'd heard people weren't loving this book but you definitely sealed the deal for me.
