This horror epic didn't impress me as much as I thought it would. It tells the story of seven adults, each living separate lives but coming together again to honour a promise they made years ago, when they were children. An agreement they made to kill a monster, should it return to wreak havoc again. Reunited, they must work hard to fully restore their memories and kill It once and for all. King's grip on Derry as a setting is mind-blowing. He knows every street, nook, cranny, hiding spot, tree, I could go on. His descriptions are intricate and well thought out, he builds suspense well and the threat the group of friends are up against feels very real because of it. There's just one problem. I wasn't scared. The monster, appearing most often as a wise-cracking killer clown, barely sent a shiver down my spine. I was more frightened by the crazy local bully if I'm honest, Henry Bowers is a great character. But it scores three stars because I expected more from such a long and slow paced novel.
