What a fascinating take on story-telling! Comprising of six stories, each exploring a different writing style, genre and time period, 'Cloud Atlas' is masterfully penned. The six stories are linked tenuously but they could easily stand alone and Mitchell is impressive in his ability to write well in a variety of ways! In terms of characterisation, I found Mitchell's approach to be meticulous and well-thought out considering how much characterisation he would have had to consider. I certainly cared about the fates of each lead of the story, which surprised me, as I thought there would be at least one that irritated me to the point of boredom. The constant interruptions of the story could be frustrating at times, especially when trying to remember characters, but overall it is beautifully delivered.
