Why is it that depending on the mood I am in, or perhaps how much sleep I have had, I either love this book or hate it? Lately it bugs me more often than not. I used to think that this book's message was the bounds of a mother's love and how she would sacrifice everything for her child. Now I see the tree as a mother who gives to a child without teaching him anything, so that she is barren at the end and he is a selfish old man without any thought for others. I can see how easy it is to want to give our children everything, even if it means sacrificing ourselves in the process, but in this case I wonder if Silverstein was commenting more on the "me" generation and how overdoing it actually ends up sacrificing the potential of the child as well as the sanity of the parents. Or maybe I just need more sleep. :)
