The book covers how students who are immersed in popular culture and the online culture are already learning several of the skills that are the focus of first-year writing programs. While I don't agree with every assumption Williams makes about first and second year college students, I do see some of the same reactions from my students in class. They have understood advanced concepts of audience since high school and are no longer coming into programs thinking that writing is for only the teacher. I agree that we need to challenge students more in the classroom, but understand that students are coming in with an incomplete understanding of rhetoric. Worth reading for any teacher who works with students on writing assignments.
