Nirvana Why did you dislike Winnie the Pooh? I've not read the books myself, but from the snippits I've read, Milne seems at least fairly competent.

J.G. Keely A lot of the problem is that soft, coddling tone of being spoken down to--the same one adults adopt when they're trying to lull a child, or distract it, or otherwise manipulate. With all the sentimentality and nostalgia, it's just too artificial and distant--too much like someone is trying to sell me something.

I prefer a tone that really tries to engage with the child (or adult reader), on their level, which challenges and intrigues and teases and sympathizes, as Lewis Carroll does.
