Butler gives a thoughtful, detailed analysis into his own semi-intuitive, semi-planned process of writing novels and short stories and exhorts other writers to use his methods. In spite of Butler's occasional my-way-or-the-highway tone, writers who approach fiction writing intuitively or logically will enjoy (and perhaps learn from, as I did) this book. Butler also wrote about 45 failed short stories and several failed novels before achieving some success with his work; in a nice contrast, one of the chapters of this book includes one of Butler's early failed stories and his thoughts on precisely why it failed. Highly recommended.
