Angie I enjoyed this book tremendously, very very much and it has been a great holiday read for me. It is very dark, tense to the point of me gasping many times during the twists and turns leading up to the climax. The central character Tom Ripley, is plausible (as he is well written) but creepy, pyschotic and excrutiating. I loved the Italian backdrop to the story too and also the style of Highsmith's writing which I thought was very easy to read. The build up of the plot was very effective right up until the very end: a tale very well told. I will certainly be reading more of her books in the future.
