Full review later. Need to read book 3 now. Suffice to say, it's even more brutal than the 1st book but so, so captivating. Read till 4 AM in the morning.

5 stars. Brilliant.

From the first book, Froi is not someone you would like. He's an uneducated vicious little thief who almost done the unspeakable to the first book protagonist. A scum from slum.

And that's the brilliant thing about him. A perfect case of nature vs nurture. In hands of good men and women, Froi learnt. We saw him grow. Saw him change. Yes, he still need to count to ten in all languages he knew but he tried. He realize his grave mistake in the past and accept a set of rules impose by other. But that doesn't mean he's a blind follower of the rules either. His experience made him the perfect match for the woman he would come to love.

Quintana of Charyn is one of the most tragic protagonist I ever came across. But part of tragedy was brought to her by herself, in order to prevent others from suffering. The darkness of her situation made her soul glows ever brighter.

Anyhow, what truly made this book is the supporting cast. The brother Arjuro and Gargarin, two brilliant men who has gone through much suffering but still retain their love for each other. Lirah of Serker, a fierce soul who show such a strength. And De Lancey, how they love!

A warning: This is the 2nd book of the series and it strongly connected with the 3rd book. You should really have Quintana of Charyn (book 3) in your hands before starting this one. Otherwise, you'll have to run to bookstore!
