really liked it
bookshelves: realistic, teen-books
Read from February 25 to 26, 2010

A story of a year-long secret love affair between two teens: a rich girl and a boy from a low-income family.

Julia is dead, the victim of a horriffic car accident, and now Colt must put his life back together while trying to hide the fact that he and Julia were secretly involved. The facade is shattered when Julia's brother reveals he knows about the secret affair and presents Colt with a journal Julia kept during the past year, a journal which describes (in detail) her affair with Colt and her uncertanities about her current boyfriend. The plot thickens as Colt reads the journal and relives his meetings with Julia. He soon finds that a guy can only keep secrets bottled up inside for so long before he explodes. Added to the drama is an almost West Side Story-esque conflict between the teens living on Black Mountian (the rich section) and those living in the Flats (the poor section).

A real page turner. Kept me reading, wanting to know what happened next...right up until the final pages where it is revealed exactly why Colt has had such a hard time putting the past behind him.
