it was ok

I looked forward to reading Alexander McCall Smith's 44 Scotland Street series, based on my enjoyment of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and The Sunday Philosophy Club series. Unfortunately, Love Over Scotland is, indeed, "twee," as one critic said of his work.

I blame the book's serial format--it was first serialized in the The Scotsman newspaper. The cliffhangers are too obvious for a book format, and the chapters largely lack the perception that richened Sunday Philosophy or the exoticism (if I'm honest with myself) that flavored No. 1.

Perhaps the series would have been more effective if I'd started at the beginning. It does have some lovely moments, such as a reunion between a dog and his human (yeah, I'm a sucker). Sadly, though, I spent most of the book not caring.
