A decent story, and well written. But the narrator character, Gabriel, was too over the top, and his hand wringing-turned-plot strained credibility. Hello?! Background check! Professional associations! The internet, even in 2000, would hold answers. The result is a tale written by someone who appears to be woefully out of touch or willfully delusional. Entertaining, but unreal. I want something in which to believe, however briefly. Coincidentally, this book and the very next novel I picked up both refer to Matthew Shepard's savage murder.
