I encountered this book while "babysitting" for a couple of sisters in Putney. I loved them so much, and rare was the occassion that I actually got to spend time with them. The older girl was super sophisticated and didn't need a bedtime story to fall asleep to.

The but younger, who was about 7, pulled this book from her bookshelf and asked me to read it her and she clutched my thumb and drifted off to dreamland.

Now I realize how perfect a bedtime story this is, a colorful ode to NYC, the paintings so alive with life and history. The narrative such a strong voice from the main character. A study in imagination and hope.

By the end of this short volume, my young charge was fast asleep, off in her own starry sky. And I have loved this book ever since.
