This was almost more fun to page through after I'd seen Venice, but simultaneously made me long to go back. Such is the power of a good travel book!

I love the "Back Door Travel Philosophy" summarized on p. 16. A tidbit:

"Affording travel is a matter of priorities. (Make do with the old car.) You can travel -- simply, safely, and comfortably -- nearly anywhere in Europe for $120 a day plus transportation costs (allow more for big cities). In many ways, spending money only builds a thicker wall between you and what you came to see."
