really liked it

I was honestly a bit hesitant to check out this book; while I love history, so many books set during American slavery are as full of racism and self-justification as the historic atrocities they condemn. This one piqued my interest with its additional tag of "science fiction," and I'm glad I took the bait.

The narrative wobbles occasionally, veering dangerously near to cliche once or twice in both its historical and its sci-fi angles, but overall it's solid and enjoyable, tense in the right places and surprising where it should be. Without spoiling the story, I want to say that Mosley did a tough and clever thing in not carrying the story to its usual and expected conclusion; the point at which 47 begins his narration to us is the correct one, though unconventional.
