really liked it
bookshelves: science-fiction

I haven't read a lot of hard sci-fi, but this seems a step above many of my previous experiences. The science is there, believable and intriguing. The descriptions of the pursuit of sense in equations, a beauty in law, are compelling and are the descriptions of how science is really done in institutions, complete with the personality conflicts / foibles / politicking / trends and sacred cows. But it also reads well as ... literature. No easy task as most with the scientific chops to build in the details write with a wooden tone or the mechanistic lurching of old machinery. A very good read.

As an aside, though I haven't seen it referenced, I can't imagine this isn't part of the "Lost" essential reading along with The Third Policeman and The Invention of Morel.
