Ok...Pat Conroy can write up a storm, literally, as he did in this book set in Charleston. And you really can't put it down because of the soap opera storylines. But the themes are a little tired and it was easy to figure out early in the book that it was the beloved community priest who drove the golden brother to suicide. Still, the guy can write--especially the descriptive love songs to the city of Charleston. Entertaining, even memorable, but more like TV than literature.
