really liked it
bookshelves: world-history
Recommended for: people who are big old Euro history nerds.

Best savored if you have more than a passing knowledge of the French Rev/Nap Wars. Bell tries to get across the idea that the kind of butchery seen in WWI was not unprecedented or shocking, merely forgotten. A very good examination of French history from 1789 to 1814 and why Napoleon failed to pacify the lands he conquered.
