** spoiler alert ** This book took me a bit to get into and change my reading process.

While it wasn't written in old English it had a more formal aspect to it than current authors do. The introduction was nice to get an overall background of Jemison and her story.

Each chapter was introduced with a snapshot outline of what each one was going to be about, so theoretically you could just read each of those. The appendices involved different aspects of the local Native American life at the time.

Violent deaths and happy times were shared in such a matter of fact way that while heart breaking were a fact of life for her. It was interesting that this was recounted and written so long ago with such detail in which she spoke you could imagine a grandma reliving earlier days sitting on a front porch and watching her eyes drift back to those times.
