I was drawn to this book because my parents were born and raised in Brooklyn and married there in 1951, the time-setting of this novel. It is a beautifully written story that gently explores to varying degrees immigration, racial and ethnic integration, family and self-awakening, all from the perspective of a young Irish woman who comes to Brooklyn at the urging of her family for a better life.
