** spoiler alert ** I had to read this for book club, and it was a total dud. "Tiresome" is a good word for it. Luckily it only took me about an hour and a half to read.

I don't know what the point of this story was, but I think it was supposed to be touchingly sentimental -- and it failed. While I kept waiting for something to happen, it was full of clunky descriptions, summed-up scenes where real dialogue might have been nice, eye-rollingly confusing characterizations, and an overbearing cliched nostalgia for old New York. Also it was fairly crude in places, which always bugs me.

SPOILER ALERT! "The Gift" that the author's father gives him is a drunken fight in a bar on Christmas Eve. Wow, that is sure some fond memories of paternal love right there. What the hell??
