One of the first Canadian books I have enjoyed. The first bit was okay but, after the first 40 pages or so, I was hooked. The topics were wonderful and it really showed you that being set out for one thing in life can have many consequences. Duddy really wanted to achieve his goal but it had many detrimental effects, effects that he didn't care about. He was selfish and manipulative, rude and unappreciative of anyone around him and yet, though depressing, it was a great read. I wanted to see how it would all pan out: would he abandon his goal and be happy with those around him or would he keep fighting and stand alone? A definite to-read a second time.
