really liked it
bookshelves: fiction
Read in November, 2009

Reading this, quite by coincidence, right after reading Zoe Heller's The Believers, revealed the weaknesses in the latter book. Potok's characters are more complex and his criticism of their orthodoxies seem both more compassionate and more knowing of the positive sides of belief. While remaining critical of some of Orthodox Judaism's belief, for instance, he still shows the beauties of the religion and its rituals.
