"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" gives the reader a wonderfully enjoyable experience.

Mikael Blomkvist suffered a guilty verdict in a liablitiy suit and faces a prison term. He's offered a job and a promise to be able to clear his name by getting evidence that will convict Hans-Eric Wennerstrom of misappropriation of funds and other offenses. To get this evidence, Mikael must agree to spend one year writing the history of the Vanger family and research the disappearance of Harriet Vanger.

Harriet is the granddaughter of Henrik Vanger's brother and vanished forty years ago.

Part of the mystery is that Harriet disappeared from Hedeby Island. At the time there were only about sixty people on the Island. Many of the people were members of the Vanger family, including Harriet's brother Mortin, who is now the CEO of Vanger enterprises.

Mikael stays on the Island in a guest cottage and later contacts Lisbeth Salander to be his research assistant. Salander is the girl with the dragon tattoo. She is a twenty-four year old hacker and a person with amazing common sense, perception and possesses a photographic memory. She is also anti-social and has been classified as mentally incompetent. In the early part of the story, Lisbeth is under legal protection of an unscrupulous attorney who attempts to control her by forcing her to gratify his sexual desires.

What Mikael and Lisbeth unearth is a multi-generational pattern of serial rape and murder.

Salander is one of the most unique and memorable characters in literature. She is slim, almost anorexic, she seems like a teen rebel with her piercings and tattoos but is smart and relentless. She has the heart of a warrior and the loyalty of a best friend.

The author died of a heart attack just after delivering the manuscript to the editors. His book has been nominated or won the following awards.
