My main beef with this novel is how damn heart wrenching it was. Reading it felt like I was being subjected to emotional abuse.

A WWI vet light keeper, and his unable-to- carry-a-pregnancy-to-term-wife, live on an isolated lighthouse off the coast of Australia. A live infant washes ashore and seems to be the answer to their prayers. Except that things are not so simple and much emotional agony ensues.

The historical setting is interesting, the characters are all sympathetic and the description is lovely. Really not a bad book – just too much. Recommended for lovers of babies and tearjerkers.
