Most of you know that I have loved this series, but Nesbo is treading on thin ice with me. With "Phantom", the novel immediately before this one, he messed with our heads. He led us to believe that was the end of the road for the series. But he came back again, red herrings and nefarious intentions in hand. He writes a solid mystery, fast-paced, complex. He throws main characters under the bus, which is heartbreaking but ballsy. But he manipulates the reader time and time again. He deliberately writes a scene to keep you on the edge of your seat...did this person die? Is this a wedding or a funeral? Who is the person in the coma? It is intentionally vague, until he decides you have squirmed enough and he throws out his reveal. This is a trick that he has overused at this point, and honestly after the last novel, I no longer believe a thing he implies, so it has lost that luster. Am I to believe that NOW the series is over? No idea, and I'm done guessing.
