Set during the civil rights era in Jackson, Mississippi, this novel is narrated by three different women: Aibileen and Minny, who work as black maids for white women, and Skeeter (Eugenia) a white, young, aspiring journalist. Skeeter decides to write a book revealing what it is like to work as a colored maid for a white Southern women, and she relies on Minny and Aibileen to interview and find other maids to interview. The character development is excellently done, and the writing is colloquial and honest.
