I spent most of the time after Ranec is introduced frustrated with Ayla for even considering him. I was attached to Jondolar and I thought she should be as well. Thinking back on it, I can see some of the reasons she wavered. Ranec was just as dependable as Jondolar and staying with him meant staying with all her new family instead of journeying out into the unknown again. The only part I can't remember is why Jondolar couldn't stay with the Mamutoi so that Ayla could stay. I'd have to read it again to figure it out.
