This is one of the most beautifully written books I have read in years. I hope that one day it will be taught in schools as an example of a simple, but effective, writing style. What I loved so much about this book was the book’s total simplicity—simplicity of character, plot, writing style, and location. The characters are intelligent and deep, but not everyone in the book has some sort of existential angst or overriding neurosis. The rooms are characterized as either dusty or clean with yellow curtains. Precious Ramotswe solves several short mysteries rather than one complicated one. This book is the antithesis of ornate and it manages to capture so much of what is beautiful in life. I cannot think of anyone I admire who would not like this book.
