I decided to read a random Mike Shayne novel--rumor has it that this is the 48th in the series--and I was rewarded with a steaming bowl of hard-boiled crap stew. Lesson learned!

Mark I don't think I've read this particular one, but I find the earlier Mike Shayne books are more like pints of Ben & Jerry's: enjoyable to consume, but you don't always feel great after you finish them. I do love the McGinnis covers, though.

David I probably would have been much better off if I had read an early title written by the original "Brett Halliday" rather than one of the later ghosters--but, yes, at least I did read one with a nice McGinnis cover.
