What women have to endure in Islamic countries that are ruled by stringent Islamic rulers is portrayed by the two women chracters in this book. One cannot believe that what these two go through could possibly happen today. Mariam and Laila forge an alliance against the brutal man who has brought them together, and together they endure abuse and heartbreak and ultimately freedom. This is a story of love, friendship and sacrifice beautifully told by an Afghan man who has made it his goal to let the world know about the despicable conditions of life in his native land.
