I couldn't put this down, but paradoxically I really don't like it that much. One of the few JHunt books for the year that I hadn't already read (or planned to read very soon), and my least favorite so far. It's extremely compelling, but sickened me. I think the ill feeling just points to the power in the writing, and it's completely my failing that I didn't enjoy the book more. More like 2 1/2 stars, but I do think that the writing is excellent. The last thing that I read that affected me in a similar way was INEXCUSABLE, a few years ago. I just don't even like the idea of such a completely unreliable narrator, so this was destined not to be a favorite of mine. I think most teens would like it much better than I do, though. I'm a little sorry that this was my first Larbalestier, since I've always thought that I'd like her "Magic or Madness" trilogy, just haven't gotten around to it.
