The Iberian peninsula drifts away from the Europian continent, threatening to collide with the Azores and then with North America. The premise is great and the reactions of governments and residents are so accurate. The story line of the 5 (or 6 counting the dog) main characters gets a bit bogged down, but I suppose that should be expected of a stone raft and maybe that was the point. Not my favorite Saramago book, but memorable all the same.
