Although dry at times and full of early American politics, this biography also gave a good view into the personal life of Crockett and what drove the man who became a legend. Always dirt poor, often in debt, and never content to be in one place for very long, he just kept moving on to the next adventure, usually leaving his family behind.

One of the last sentences in the book sums up the whole: "In the end David Crockett's importance lives on, not in what he achieved but because he never stopped trying, he never quit, and he never lost hope."
