it was amazing
bookshelves: written-by-women, all-time-faves, reliable-recs

The positive: An outstanding female protagonist, as is to be expected with McKinley. Also note her trademark use of magic as commonplace, as well as her touches of romance, but only with a man worthy of the heroine.

The negative: A bit slower in the beginning than I would like.

The summary: Not my very favorite McKinley (that honor belongs to Spindle's End) but definitely a wonderful book. I will be reading this one for a long time, and pressing it into the hands of my future fantasy-inclined students.
