This is a powerful story, and the author does a great job of developing the characters. Everyone can remember how it's like in high school, especially those who've been bullied or ostracized. But Val faces returning to high school under the worst circumstances. Her boyfriend used a list of people that she and he hated, and targeted those people in a school shooting, killing several, including himself. Val herself is shot, but many feel she is as responsible for the violence as her boyfriend. The book follows her reentry into school and her long, slow recovery, with flashbacks to the fateful day creating tension.
