Robin Kirk's Reviews > Reality Boy
I loved the premise of this. The writing is engaging, truthful, sometimes quite deep and perceptive. So why not 5 stars? I guess that I felt that this was so predictable. The horribleness, the self-doubt, the awful parents, the love interest, the epiphany. Nothing really surprised me about Gerald's life, his feelings, the people around him, his journey. In a way, it felt a little reality-TV-ish, with the appearance of real life but in the background quite scripted and formulaic. It's a "certain kind" of YA book, I'm sure satisfying to many readers but thin in its aspirations for something that goes beyond a movie of the week approach. You know exactly what you are getting and the ending is as set as any Hollywood rom-com.
